Are you a homeowner looking for information regarding asbestos?
Firstly, the recent regulations only apply if you are a Person Conducting Business or Undertaking. If you are doing the odd DIY job around your home the regulations don’t apply to you. However, we believe in order to keep you and your family safe a competent person should check what you’re working on and if necessary get a sample analysed before you start work.
If the work you are doing on the property is bigger than a DIY job and requires planning permission, there’s a good chance the works will require a demolition or refurbishment survey to search for asbestos. Your builder or whoever is undertaking the work has a legislated requirement to ensure asbestos is identified and removed before any work that may disturb the asbestos begins in your home. This is to protect you and your family.
Your contractor should require a demolition or refurbishment survey before they commence work. This is an intrusive survey which may need to penetrate parts of the building. The survey should be limited to the area of work. Depending on the size of the job it might be safer if you are not living in the house when the survey is done.
After the removal of the asbestos identified areas you should receive a clearance certificate that verifies the area is safe. Your contractor must ensure this is carried out by an independent third party.
