Introducing our Environmental Technician, Charles McCutcheon - Healthy Homes NZ

October 28, 2021by Nathaniel

Charles is a knowledgeable member of our team, and has been involved in the asbestos industry for nearly seven years. Read on to find out what he has to say about the importance of testing for asbestos in properties.

How long have you been working within the Asbestos industry, and how did you get into this line of work?
“I have been working in the asbestos industry for nearly seven years. I was introduced to the asbestos problem through my previous employer who ended up doing a lot of asbestos work for the Christchurch rebuild. I really enjoyed the work and haven’t looked back since.”

What is an important reason for people to get their homes tested for asbestos?
“If people don’t know they have asbestos or don’t know the risks involved with handling asbestos it can be a danger to themselves and others. It can cause serious health issues if it is not removed and disposed of correctly and so it is always better to get a professional to identify the presence of asbestos and give advice on its management.”

What are some of the health and safety steps or controls that you use to protect the wellbeing of those occupying the house when you’re sampling a property for asbestos?
“Asbestos is dangerous if it is inhaled because it can cause serious lung diseases. Therefore it is important to prevent the fibres becoming airborne while sampling. This can be done by correct sampling techniques, including the use of spraying water and adhesive spray over the area being sampled. Clients and other people should not be in the room when sampling is being carried out.”

Why is what you do important to you?
“People spend a lot of time in their homes and can be quite fearful of asbestos – so if I can educate them on asbestos and make them sleep easier at night it is fulfilling work. My work can also help prevent people from getting serious lung diseases, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.”

Where do you see the NZ asbestos industry in five years time?
“The direction the industry has gone in the last few years has been encouraging with contractors and PCBUs becoming much more educated and information more readily available to them. I see the industry further following the United Kingdom’s example with more stringent regulations with the aim to fully eliminate asbestos-related illnesses and the continued removal of asbestos from houses and buildings.”
